The English register descends from Late Latin regestrum, a clerical variation of regestum, the past participle of regerere: re- (back) + gerere (to carry, to bear). To regerere is to carry back into form — to record, to copy onto the roll, to enter into the book that holds what mustn't be lost. The verb is the same one in gestation (carrying), gesture (a thing carried into the air with the hand), gerundive (the verbal noun of bearing-into-being). Gerere is not specific to records; it's the wider verb of bringing-into-form. The re- particularizes it. To regere is to bring something back across the gap of time between the act and its preservation.

By the medieval period, regestrum is no longer the verb but the artifact — the actual book sitting in the chancery or the parish, the bound roll where the regerere has settled into ink.
